This week, we look at the “scandal” of God choosing an unmarried woman—most believe a teenager!—to bear His Son.  The man Mary was pledged to marry, Joseph, had a plan to spare her further shame by divorcing her quietly.  What does this choice by God say about what God wants to do with shame and disgrace?

November 27, 2022 - A Scandal of Riches

As we begin our Advent series, the intent is to see the far-reaching implications of the gospel:  in God coming to us in Jesus Christ, there are reversals and restorations.  We will see the “Scandal of Christmas.”  One such reversal shows in the words of Mary:  “He has filled the hungry with good things, but sent the rich away empty.”  What might God be doing with words like these?

It’s actually a means by which God drives people into the central purpose of what they were created for: worship.God’s grace will abound towards us in our sacrifical generosity for the purpose of meeting tangible needs, and even more importantly for the purpose of meeting spiritual needs.

Is it enough to be generous?  Or, is God interested in our attitude in our generosity as well?  Paul challenges the believers in Corinth to finish the work they started, but also to have their willingness “match” their giving.  It appears Paul is eagerly desiring that these believers’ hearts match their outward behaviors.  In your relationship with Christ, do you see your attitude and behavior aligning like this?Scripture:  2 Corinthians 8:8-15
