The Gospel of John opens with a different Christmas story than the other gospels.  It begins “in the beginning,” with John talking about a Greek philosophical concept called the Logos (Word).  John claimed that the principle that organized and created everything became flesh and dwelt among us in Jesus Christ.  This scandal of Christmas is that all the treasures of wisdom are found in Jesus.  Where are we finding our wisdom?

This week, we hear in the Christmas story about “wise men from the east,” traditionally called the Magi.  One Bible Dictionary describes them in this way:  ““Magi” originally referred to priests in Persia who were traditionally associated with secret wisdom, magic, and astrology. Why do you think these Magi are included in the story?  Matthew’s gospel in particular wants to emphasize Jesus as the fulfillment of the Israelite hopes for a Messiah, so why include priests from another religion?  What message does this send to us about the scope of Jesus’ coming? Scripture: Matthew 2:1-12.Pastor David Burke is the preaching pastor in this episode..Please visit our website at www.fremontpres.org. You can also remail us at podcast@fremontpres.org

This week, we will look at how God coming to earth in Jesus Christ upset the political power of the day. King Herod tried to deceive, and then used violence to get his way. We still live in a world dominated by deception and violence.  But the power of the story of Christmas is that God’s will is still alive, for the Son of God still lives.  And while we celebrate his birth every Advent season, we also know that He will come again to make all things new, restoring justice and bringing peace.
