April 2, 2023 - Triumphal Entry

On Palm Sunday we look at Jesus’ triumphant entry in Jerusalem. But his entrance is far from what the people expected—wanting a warrior king to be their champion. Instead, Jesus came as a figure of peace, a messiah for Israel and the nations. This passage has us ask how have we can be like the people, making God something He is not. Instead, let us look to the Prince of Peace whose good news is greater than anything we can imagine.

March 26, 2023 - Right on Time

Most of us are living in that “in between” time with Jesus.  We are going through something—a time of illness, diagnosis with waiting for treatment, uncertainty in work or relationship, financial struggles.  And we may call out to Jesus, and it feels like he is staying put.  Consider these words from James Baldwin: “The Lord never seems to get there when you want him, but when he arrives he’s always right on time.”  (James Baldwin, The Fire Next Time)

Some scholars say this story should be included in any list of “signs” as it was done in public, and forecasted the most important “sign”—Jesus’ resurrection.  We will look at how Jesus turning over the tables of the money-changers in the temple showed his heart and his authority, and gave a glimpse for what was to come.
