In this week’s passage, Mark 2:13-17, Jesus will face opposition because he keeps company with tax collectors and sinners. One of the virtues that made the early Christians so winsome and effective in leading people to Christ was that they were “in the world,” but not “of the world.” They didn’t pull back and separate, yet neither did they compromise their convictions. We see that with Jesus. There was no one with whom he refused to interact. There was no one who was too much of an outsider for him to engage. Yet, Jesus was purposeful in those interactions. He wasn’t lackadaisical with these interactions, but intentional. Dan Willson, Guest Speaker

Jesus’ priority was to preach God’s word. Jesus was not just concerned about broken bodies, but broken souls. His compassion was not less than healing broken bodies, but it was more than healing broken bodies. What good would it have done to only heal people’s temporal bodies for three years in Israel, yet to neglect the healing of their eternal souls.
